Art in the Building
Artworks located in Music Center halls and intimate spaces such as children’s music waiting rooms, practice rooms and office hallways are intended to enliven and enhance these spaces. While providing decorative color, the art displayed inspires thoughtful reflection and celebrates the human spirit.
In the 1950s, Professor of Art Ezra S. Hershberger and Professor of Music Mary Oyer initiated an art collection for the campus – a collection that has grown to over 225 pieces campus-wide.
Upon entering the Music Center’s main entrance, the first piece of art one encounters is by noted contemporary artist Miriam Shapiro. Her 1995 screen print “In the Heat of Winter” provides a warm and brightly colored focal point in the building lobby. View images of this and other works of art on display throughout the building.
Goals for selection and exhibition of visual art in the Music Center reflect the larger goals of the campus. The art expresses excellence in tune with the function of the architectural space, in this case quality music programming.
